Havensfield Hens

One of our best investments in 2011 was commissioning Spring to relaunch Havensfield. We have been delighted with the results, from packaging to vans to flyers to advertising - everything they did was spot on, they captured the ethos of Havensfield at our very first meeting and created a bold, fresh image to help us stand apart from our competition. After meeting Erika and seeing their initial designs for a logo we knew they were the people we wanted to work with and they have never disappointed.

Planning
Havensfield came to us with an unusual objective - to reduce their market! The thought behind this was that regular runs into London for their deliveries eroded profits to such a degree as to render them a cost drain rather than revenue earner. Keen to expand their profile within East Anglia, Havensfield commissioned Spring to deliver an eye catching, sector-leading new brand image.

A comprehensive research exercise allowed us to position this large free range egg distributor clearly in the provenance-led food market that's really taking off in East Anglia. We briefed into the studio a requirement to create an image that sets them apart from self-conscious rusticity but without straying into the cartoonish territory occupied by a national competitor.

Creative
Our first creative task was to create an up market, self confident brand identity. From a set of six recommended ID styles, Havensfield selected an

elegant one colour solution which in time they hope to adapt to their egg stampers.

The accompanying imagery is of their chickens. Why not make literal provenance the star of the show? Spring's photographic studio - six miles from our head office in a converted stable block - hosted a flock of hens one autumn day. Photographer and assistant soon learnt each hen's character, from the shy to the theatrical. One in particular proved to be a perfect model and from this shoot came tens of great images of red hens.

We set a colour palette of tawny-grey and duck-egg blue which were felt to complement the natural shades of the physical egg boxes and the eggs themselves, as well as setting the hens' feathers off to perfection.

Application
Spring liaised with our own suppliers as well as those with established relationships with Havensfield. The brand has been carried across all consumer touch points, from packaging to delivery

driver uniforms, print administrative documents to their vehicles.

Spring's studio created all artwork, including for every different vehicle type, to ensure the varied supplier group would achieve consistency. For this reason too, we project managed every production job.

Havensfield briefed in a web response which allowed the teams to work together to update their original web presence with the new brand and design.

The photography of the hens, to our delight, won a national competition within the egg producer industry, which Fi and Alaistaire Brice collected just before Christmas.
